  • Pick a quiet space with minimal outside noise.
  • Listen for echo by clapping or speaking. If you hear flutter echoes or muddiness, you’ll need some basic treatment.
  • Avoid parallel walls if possible, or break them up with furniture or panels to reduce standing waves.
  • You don’t need high ceilings or a perfect rectangle as you might for a major arena rock band recording setup, but try to avoid cramped corners or narrow hallways that cause boomy resonances.

Understanding room ambience

Room ambience affects every sound source, from shakers to congas. Walk around while playing or talking to find spots where the tone is clear and free of excessive reflections. These “sweet spots” often need less treatment.

Watch out for:

  • Flutter echoes caused by parallel surfaces.
  • Boomy floors on thin surfaces.
  • Muddy corners where low frequencies build up.

Mark these clean-sounding areas and consider placing yourself and your mic there for a more direct sound.

Mic placement

  • Close miking: For smaller hand percussion like shakers, place a small-diaphragm condenser just a couple of inches away. If the tone is overly bright, angle the mic off-axis by about 15°.
  • Moderate distance: Larger instruments (like congas) can handle 6–8 inches in distance (15–20 cm), letting the resonant heads breathe without overwhelming the mic.

Using overhead or room mics

If you’re recording multiple instruments simultaneously or want a wider sense of space, stereo overheads can be invaluable:

  • Overhead microphones: Position them in an XY or spaced pair stereo technique above the percussion setup at chest or head height. This captures the entire stereo image for a more natural blend.
  • Check in mono: Small time differences between mics can lead to phase issues. Summing to mono is a quick way to spot cancellations.

Angles and off-axis considerations

Different percussion instruments radiate sound in unique ways:

  • Cajón or woodblock: Experiment around sound holes or striking zones.
  • Bongos or congas: A dynamic or condenser mic angled at 45° towards the batter head captures strong attack without too much ring.
  • Shakers or tambourines: For metallic or high-frequency elements, aim slightly off-axis to tame harsh transients.

Addressing phase issues with multiple mics

When using more than one mic (close plus overhead, or multiple close mics) phase problems can creep in. To minimise phase issues:

  • Distant miking vs close miking: If you blend both, keep the mic capsules at consistent ratios. The 3:1 golden rule (distance between mics is at least three times the distance from any single mic to its source) helps maintain dynamics under control.
  • Listen in mono: Listen back with everything summed to mono. If the sound thins out or important frequencies vanish, adjust mic positions until the tone remains full.

These guidelines apply no matter what kind of percussion you’re recording. With thoughtful mic placement, you’ll capture each instrument’s character without muddiness or unwanted reflections.

If you’re recording anything with a batter head (like congas, djembes), make sure the heads are tensioned properly for a balanced tone. 

This reduces unwanted overtones and helps each hit sound consistent. Check the lugs or ropes for even tension and retune if you hear overly ringy or dead spots.

Recording hand percussion: shakers, bongos, and more

  • Bongos and congas: Place a mic 15-30 cm away, angled slightly down. For stereo pair techniques, mic each drum separately to highlight their distinct pitches.
  • Shakers and tambourines: Distance of 30–60 cm prevents overloading the capsule with transients. Aim off-axis if it’s too sharp.
  • Reducing plosives or air bursts: For hand drums and frame drums, don’t point the mic directly at the centre of the head. A slight tilt helps avoid strong bursts of air hitting the diaphragm.

Capturing the nuances of metallic percussion

Metallic percussion such as cymbals, hi-hats, and bells can add sparkle to a track, but they’re prone to harsh frequencies if miked incorrectly:

  • Cymbals: A small-diaphragm condenser placed about 15–20cm above the cymbal edge usually works best. Angle it just off-axis to tame piercing highs.
  • Hi-hats: Position the mic roughly 10cm above the top cymbal, angled down 45 degrees. This highlights the “chick” and subtle nuances without sounding brittle.
  • Room or overhead microphones: If you have several cymbals or other metallic instruments, consider using overhead or room mics about 1–1.5m above for a more natural blend. Always check phase by listening in mono. If the sound thins out, adjust the mic distance or angles.

You’ll bring out the best in every percussion track by tailoring your mic distances and angles to each instrument. Experiment with small adjustments until you find the sweet spot that captures both attack and tonal richness.

For a natural stereo image, I often pan shakers, tambourines, and other hand percussion around 30% to the left or right, letting each element occupy its own space. 

Grouping percussion tracks to a single bus also makes it easier to adjust overall volume or apply shared effects.

Applying equalisation for clarity and warmth

Thoughtful EQ ensures each percussion instrument sits clearly in the mix without sounding harsh or boxy. 

Start by cutting frequencies you don’t need. Many smaller hand drums and shakers benefit from a high-pass filter to remove unnecessary low-end rumble. Then shape the tone so the natural character of each instrument comes through.

Frequency ranges to consider

  • Sub-bass (below 60Hz): Often irrelevant for light percussion like shakers or tambourines. Keep only what adds depth to larger drums, like a djembe.
  • Low end (60–100Hz): Adds body to congas, bongos, and other drum-like percussion. Use this range sparingly to avoid a boomy sound.
  • Low mids (200–500Hz): Critical for warmth and fullness. Too much can make hand drums sound boxy, so cut gently if it gets muddy.
  • High mids (2–5kHz): Emphasises the attack and presence of hits, slaps, or rattles. Boost here for clarity, but be cautious not to introduce harshness.
  • High end (8kHz+): Provides air and sparkle for metallic or high-frequency percussion like shakers, bells, and cymbals. A slight lift can make these instruments shine without overpowering other mix elements.

Achieving consistency and timing

Focus on tight timing to make percussion tracks feel solid and professional. Grid alignment helps, but maintaining a natural feel is crucial.

A few tips for tightness:

  • Record to a click track if you’re collaborating with band mates or layering.
  • Minor timing tweaks (5–10 ms) can lock parts together without sounding robotic.
  • Personal preference matters: keep natural grooves if they enhance the feel.

Advanced techniques and creative tips

  • Experiment with spaced pair stereo overheads to give your recordings a wider frequency range and a more realistic sense of space.
  • Try distant miking behind the player or in another corner for natural reverb and unique ambience.
