Small rooms and basic equipment can make recording a killer drum sound at home seem impossible. I’ve spent countless hours helping artists capture great drum tracks in less-than-ideal spaces.

1) Sort out your recording space acoustics
Small rooms can create big sound problems when recording.
I’ve learned that treating the space properly makes all the difference in getting clean drum recordings.
- Use carpets or rugs under your kit to control floor reflections. I put a thick rug that extends at least 1 metre beyond the kit’s edges.
- Add thick curtains or acoustic panels to manage the resonant frequency of the space. I find that covering around 30% of the wall surface with acoustic foam or panels reduces unwanted reflections.
- Place bass traps in corners to control bass response and reduce mud around the bass drum (the heart of your drum kit’s low end).
- Position the kit slightly off-centre to achieve a better balance between drums and avoid parallel reflections. Sometimes you’ll need to experiment, as each room has its own quirks.
Try playing each snare drum, bass drum, and tom individually, listening for excessive ring or resonance, harsh echoes or boomy frequencies.
Move panels around until you find a sweet spot. This step alone can provide a wide range of acoustic improvements.
2) Use close mics for better control
I find that placing microphones close to each drum gives me much better control during mixing.
I’ve learned that you don’t need loads of microphones to get great results. Even with just 2-4 close mics, I can capture a solid drum sound that works well in a mix.
Remember to check for phase issues between mics. I always listen in mono while setting up to spot any problems. Keeping the mics properly spaced and aligned makes a massive difference to the final sound.
A common technique is to position mics 5-10 cm from the snare drum head or resonant head of a tom.
- Snare mic: Dynamic microphones are often preferred for their dynamic range handling. Position it a couple of inches above the rim, angled toward the snare wires for extra snap.
- Kick mic: A specialised bass drum mic (like an AKG D112) can capture punch without distorting. Aim it slightly off-axis to the snare head if bleed becomes an issue.
This setup allows you to isolate each drum in your drum tracks and EQ them individually later on.
3) Experiment with drum tuning

Proper tuning is essential for the style of music you’re recording. I always start by tuning each drum head separately before adjusting both heads together. This helps me get the most balanced sound.
Loosening the snare wires a touch can change the character significantly, depending on your personal preference.
I spend extra time on the kick drum and snare since they form the backbone of most recordings.
- A well-tuned snare should have a nice crack without unwanted overtones.
- The kick needs to have punch while maintaining clarity.
- Tighter snare head tension suits more aggressive genres, but might not fit a laid-back musical style like jazz.
- Toms require careful attention too. I tune them in relation to each other, usually in descending intervals. This creates a more musical sound when playing fills.
- For a John Bonham-style big, open sound, keep the resonant head on your toms slightly higher in pitch.
Always keep a drum key handy and be prepared to tweak tuning between takes.
4) Invest in quality microphones

You don’t need loads of fancy mics to get started. I’ve recorded great-sounding drums with just two or three well-placed microphones. It’s better to have a few quality mics than lots of cheap ones.
Here’s a few to consider:
- Pair of overheads: A stereo pair of large-diaphragm condensers or a ribbon mic/condenser combo can deliver a fuller sound from cymbals and toms. A matched pair will give you the best stereo image.
- I’ve found that a mid-side microphone setup works brilliantly for overheads. It lets you adjust the stereo width after recording, which is dead useful.
- Ribbon microphones: These provide a smooth top end for cymbals and can be used as stereo overheads to avoid harshness.
- Dynamic microphones on the snare drum and bass drum work well for handling louder transients without distortion.
Mic choice also depends on personal preference, your band mates’ input, and how you want your final drum tracks to sound.
5) Use an audio interface
An interface with multiple desk channels is key if you want separate inputs for snare drum mic, kick mic, overheads, and so on.
Look for quality preamps with a good frequency response and phantom power if using condensers or certain ribbon microphones.

I recommend checking your interface’s specifications carefully. Make sure it has enough headroom to handle loud drum hits without distorting. The preamps should provide clean gain without adding unwanted noise.
Properly set your gain levels so peaks are around -6dB. This helps preserve headroom for the dynamic range that real acoustic drums produce.
6) Focus on noise isolation

Noise control is crucial when recording drums at home.
- Build a simple drum riser using plywood floating on mineral wool slabs to reduce vibrations travelling through the floor.
- I’ve found that drum shields and gobos work brilliantly for containing sound. Place these acoustic panels around the kit to minimise reflections and reduce noise bleeding into other rooms.
- Strategically placed thick curtains, carpets, and foam panels on the walls help absorb unwanted sound. Focus on corners and early reflection points.
- For flats and shared buildings, I suggest recording during times when neighbours are typically out. This reduces stress and lets you focus on getting the best take.
- Consider using mesh drum heads and low-volume cymbals for practice sessions. While not ideal for final recordings, they’re perfect for working out parts without disturbing others.
7) Set up a separate track per mic
Creating an audio track for each mic gives you complete control over the balance between drums in the mix:
- I always label my tracks clearly with the drum piece and mic position. For example, “Kick In”, “Kick Out”, “Snare Top”, “Snare Bottom”, “Hi-Hat”, “Tom 1”, and so on.
- I recommend colour coding your tracks in your DAW. This helps me quickly spot which tracks belong to which parts of the kit. I use red for kick, blue for snare, and green for toms.
- Aim for a couple of inches between the mic capsule and drum head to minimise bleed.
- If using a spaced pair overhead approach, be aware of time difference between each mic to avoid phase issues.
- Keep your routing simple at first. Send each track directly to your main stereo output. You can get fancy with routing and effects later once you’ve got the basics sorted.
- Remember to check your input levels before recording. I aim for peaks around -12dB to leave enough headroom for mixing.
8) Explore overhead mic placement
Overhead microphones capture the entire kit, including cymbals and a bit of room sound:
- Spaced condenser microphones work brilliantly as a starting point, positioned above the kit.
- Height matters a lot with overheads. I usually start with the mics about 1 metre above the cymbals. This gives me a good mix of direct sound and room ambience.
- The 3:1 rule is crucial when using multiple mics. I keep the distance between mics three times greater than their distance to the drums to avoid phase issues.
- I always check the phase relationship between the overheads by listening in mono. If something sounds hollow or thin, I adjust the mic positions slightly until the sound fills out.
- The Glyn Johns technique is my go-to method for small spaces. I place one mic above the kit and another near the floor tom. This setup gives a natural, balanced sound.
- In tight spaces, I sometimes use a mid-side configuration. This gives me more control over the stereo width in the mix.
9) Experiment with room mic positions

Room mics give depth and a fuller sound to your drum tracks:
- Place them 6-10 feet from the kit to capture natural reverb in bigger rooms.
- If my room is small, I aim the mics away from walls to reduce unwanted reflections.
- Unidirectional microphones give me more control over what the mics pick up.
- Sometimes placing a mic in a corner can reveal unique resonance and interesting reflection. Though it’s bad news if the corner amplifies unwanted frequencies.
I find that placing a pair of room mics at ear height works well as a starting point. Moving them around the room helps me find sweet spots where the drums sound most natural.
Testing different spots with just a floor tom helps me quickly find the best mic positions. I hit the drum and listen for where it sounds most balanced in the room.
10) Try drum sample layering
Even with well-recorded acoustic drums, blending in samples can give me more control over the final sound. I can add punch to kicks, snap to snares, or beef up the whole kit.
- The trick is to pick samples that complement what I’ve recorded. I look for sounds that fill in the missing frequencies rather than compete with the original drums.
- Keep layering minimal; too many layers can muddy the mix and make drums sound messy and artificial. I usually stick to one or two samples per drum.
- Using samples solely for ambient “room” tone can simulate a larger space if your room is too small.
Proper EQ and gating ensure your real drums and samples work together seamlessly. I use filters to carve out space for each sound in the mix.
This stops the low end from getting muddy or the high end from becoming harsh.
Setting up your home studio
Acoustic treatment basics
Before you start recording, tackle the resonant frequency and reflections of your space:
- Bass traps in corners control low frequencies that can muddy up recordings.
- Acoustic foam or panels at first reflection points remove flutter echoes.
- Polar pattern considerations: cardioid mics capture less reflection from behind, so angle them wisely.

- Position monitors symmetrically at ear level.
- Keep microphone cables away from power leads.
- Face away from windows or doors to reduce unwanted bleed.
I always test different positions by playing the kit and listening for where it sounds most natural in the room.
Drum recording techniques
Recording drums requires precise microphone placement and careful attention to volume levels. These two elements make the biggest impact on your final sound quality.
Microphone selection and placement
For classic drum sounds, I recommend:
- Kick drum mic (dynamic) positioned about 5-10 cm from the bass drum beater.
- Snare drum mic angled at the snare head, capturing both the batter and some of the snare wires.
- Pair of overheads (large-diaphragm or ribbon microphones) in an XY or spaced pair configuration.
- One large-diaphragm condenser mic positioned 1-2 metres in front of the kit
For smaller rooms, I recommend placing the mics closer to reduce unwanted room reflections.
Adjust positions by a couple of inches at a time and test in mono until the phase relationship is solid.
Balancing volume and sound quality
Working in a small room requires careful volume management.
Your recording levels should peak between -12 and -6 dB on your interface meters. This gives enough headroom for dynamic playing without distortion.
- Mesh heads or a tea towel on the snare can reduce volume during practice without changing the kit drastically.
- Apply moongel or tape to control ring from the toms.
- Use dampening materials like pillows inside the kick drum
- For louder styles, ensure your interface’s processing power can handle multiple channels simultaneously.
Electronic triggers can help when volume is a major concern. They allow you to capture MIDI data while playing quietly on mesh heads.
