- Cardioid is the most common pattern. It records what’s in front while rejecting sounds from behind. I use this for most vocal recordings.
- Figure-8 picks up sound from the front and back. It’s brilliant for recording two singers facing each other or general room ambiance.
- Omnidirectional captures sound from all directions. I use this to record room ambience or multiple instruments at once.

- Cost: You don’t need to break the bank; basic foam or rockwool (inside a wooden frame)can do wonders.
WARNING! Rockwool is pretty harmful to the skin and lungs, make sure you take the necessary precautions to avoid injury. I’d recommend wrapping the rockwool (fibreglass) in a fabric to avoid the particles escaping into the room.
Good acoustics are the difference between a muddy track and a polished one, making them a key part of your recording kit.
Best practice:
- I recommend starting with four panels placed at the first reflection points in your room. These points are where sound waves first hit the walls after leaving your speakers or instruments.
- Place two panels on the side walls and one on the ceiling above your listening position. The fourth panel should go behind your monitors to reduce reflections from the front wall.
- You don’t need to cover every inch of wall space. Strategic placement of a few good-quality panels will make a big difference in recording quality.
